- Assembly: The bicameral Supreme Assembly (Oliy Majlis) consists of the Senate (Senat) with 100 seats and the Legislative Chamber (Qonunchilik Palatasi) with 150 seats.
Electoral System:
- The President of Uzbekistan is elected for a five-year term using a two-round system, in which the second “run-off” round is held between the two highest-placed candidates in instances where no candidate receives an absolute majority in the first round. There is a turnout requirement of 33 percent of all registered voters for the first round of voting, though no such rule governs the potential second round of voting. Constitutionally, the president may only serve two consecutive terms. [1]
Last Election:
- The last presidential elections were held on 4 December 2016 following the death of incumbent President Islam KARIMOV that September. Interim President Shavkat MIRZIYOYEV – who served as prime minister of Uzbekistan since 2003 under Islam KARIMOV – became Uzbekistan’s second president after receiving 88.61 percent of the vote. [2]
