General Information

At Stake in this Election:  

  • All 80 seats in the Cypriot House of Representatives. 

 

Government Structure: 

  • Chief of State: President Nikos CHRISTODOULIDES (since 1 March 2023) 

  • Head of Government: President Nikos CHRISTODOULIDES (since 1 March 2023) 

  • Assembly: unicameral, 80-seat House of Representatives (Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων) 

 

Electoral System: 

  • The President is directly elected in two rounds if necessary to serve a 5-year term.  

  • Members of the House of Representatives are directly elected via a simple proportional system to serve 5-year terms. 56 seats are reserved for members of the Greek-Cypriot community and 24 seats are reserved for the Turkish-Cypriot community. Historically, only the Greek-Cypriot seats have been contested. 

 

Last Election: 

The last election for the House of Representatives was held on May 30, 2021. Democratic Rally won 17 seats, Progressive Party of the Working People won 15 seats, Democratic Party won 9 seats, National People's Front won 4 seats, Movement for Social Democracy won 4 seats, Democratic Alignment won 4 seats, and Movement of Ecologists - Citizen's Cooperation won 3 seats. Voter turnout was 66%.

New/Unique in this Election: 

The House of Representatives passed major electoral reforms, including lowering the voting age to 17, creating an automatic voter registration system, and other changes, in May of 2025. However, these changes are not slated to take effect until July 1, 2027.
