General Information

At Stake in this Election:  

  • All 230 members of the Portuguese Assembly of the Republic 

  • Chief of State: President Marcelo REBELO DE SOUSA (since 9 March 2016) 

  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Luís MONTENEGRO (since 2 April 2024) Assembly: unicameral Assembly of the Republic (Assembleia da República), which has 230 seats. 

  • The President is directly elected by absolute majority popular vote in two rounds if needed for a five-year term. Candidates are prohibited from serving more than two consecutive terms or serving a third term within the 5 years after the expiration of the second term. 

  • The Prime Minister is appointed by the President and is usually the leader of the majority party or coalition.  

  • All 230 members of the Assembly of the Republic (Assembleia da República) are directly elected via a proportional representation system to serve 4-year terms.  

The last parliamentary election was held on March 10, 2024. The Socialist Party won 78 seats, the Democratic Alliance won 77 seats, Chega won 50 seats, and all other parties won less than 10 seats. Voter turnout was 60%
