General Information

  • All 165 seats in the Senegalese National Assembly 

 

  • Chief of State: President Bassirou Diomaye FAYE (since 2 April 2024) 

  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Ousmane SONKO (since 2 April 2024) 

  • Assembly: unicameral National Assembly (Assemblée Nationale) with 165 seats. 

 

  • The President is elected by majority vote in 2 rounds, if needed, to a 5-year term. 

  • The Prime Minister is appointed by the President. 

  • 112 members of the National Assembly are elected by plurality vote in single and multi-seat constituencies. The remaining 53 members are elected by proportional representation in a nationwide constituency. All members are elected to a 5-year term. 

 

In the last election in 2022, the Bloc of Liberals and Democrats – Takku (BLD-Takku) won a majority with 106 of 165 seats available. Voter turnout was 47%.  

 

New/Unique in this Election: 

In September, President FAYE dissolved the National Assembly and called a snap election two years into the legislative term, citing difficulties in working with the opposition-controlled body.
