General Information

At Stake in this Election:  

  • All 188 seats in the National Assembly of Chad 

 

  • Chief of State: President Mahamat Idriss DÉBY (since 6 May 2024) 

  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Allamaye HALINA (since 23 May 2024) 

  • Assembly: unicameral National Transitional Council (Conseil National de Transition) with 93 seats. 

 

  • The President is directly elected by majority vote in up to 2 rounds to a 5-year term, fully renewable.  

  • The Prime Minister is appointed by the President. 

  • All members of the National Transitional Council are appointed by the President. Following the constitutional referendum of 2023, this election will establish a bicameral Parliament, with a Senate and 188 seat National Assembly. In the Senate, two-thirds of members are indirectly elected by an electoral college of provincial and communal councilors, and the remaining members are appointed by the President. All senators serve 6-year terms, and the number of senators is yet to be established by law. All 188 members of the National Assembly are directly elected by popular vote in single and multi-member constituencies to 5-year terms.  

 

In the last election, in 2011, the Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS) won a majority with 113 seats. Voter turnout was 57%.

In 2023, Chad held, and passed, a referendum to replace the constitution and return to civilian rule. This is the first National Assembly election held under the new constitution and will facilitate the transition back to civilian rule.
