Government Structure:  

  • Chief of State: President Milo ĐUKANOVIĆ (since 20 May 2018) 

  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Dritan ABAZOVIĆ (since 28 April 2022) 

  • Assembly: unicameral assembly (Skupština) with 81 seats 

Electoral System:  

  • The President is directly elected by absolute majority vote in up to two rounds.  The President may serve up to two 5-year terms. 

  • The Prime Minister is nominated by the president and confirmed by the assembly. 

  • The Skupstina is composed of 81 members who are directly elected by proportional representation vote in a single nationwide constituency.  Members serve 4-year terms. 

Last Election: 

In the first round of the 2023 election, no candidate received a majority of the vote, triggering a runoff. Milo ĐUKANOVIĆ (DPS) and Jakov MILATOVIĆ (Europe Now!) advanced to the runoff.  Đukanović received 35.37% of the first round vote, while Milatović received 28.92%. Voter turnout was 62%.

This election follows a year of political upheaval in which the Skupstina passed two votes of no-confidence against the executive cabinet.
