At Stake in this Election: 

  • All 51 seats in the Legislative Assembly.  

 

  • Chief of State: His Highness TUIMALEALI'IFANO Va’aletoa Sualauvi II (since 21 July 2017) 

  • Head of Government: Prime Minister FIAME Naomi Mata’afa (since 24 May 2021) 

  • Assembly: Unicameral, 51-seat Legislative Assembly (Fono) 

 

  • The Chief of State is appointed by the Legislative Assembly to serve a 5-year term.

  • The Prime Minister is appointed by the Chief of State and approved by the Legislative Assembly and is usually the leader of the majority party.  

  • Members of the Legislative Assembly are directly elected via a plurality system to serve 5-year terms. Each territorial constituency is represented by a seat (41 in total), with 6 additional seats allocated to certain constituencies and 2 additional seats reserved for urban constituencies.  

 

The last election was held on 9 April 2021. The Human Rights Protection Party and the Faith in the One God of Samoa parties each won 25 seats. Voter turnout was 69%.
