At Stake in this Election:  

  • 65 of 72 seats in the Guyanese National Assembly 

 

  • Chief of State: President Mohamed Irfaan ALI (since 2 Aug 2020) 

  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Mark PHILLIPS (since 26 Aug 2020) 

  • Assembly: unicameral Parliament with a National Assembly of up to 72-seat 

 

  • The President is chosen by the party that wins a plurality in the National Assembly elections. Prior to the election, each party nominates a candidate to become the President. They are chosen to serve a 5-year term.  

  • The Prime Minister is appointed by the President. 

  • 40 of the National Assembly’s 72 seats are elected via proportional representation in a single national constituency. 25 of 72 seats are chosen by Hare quota in 10 constituencies. Up to 7 remaining seats are reserved for non-elected ministers and the Speaker of the National Assembly. All members are elected to a 5-year term. 

 

In the last election in 2020, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic won a majority with 33 of 65 seats. A coalition between A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change came in a close second with 31 seats. Voter turnout was 73%.
