General Information

At Stake in this Election: 

  • 100 seats in the Burundian National Assembly 

 

Government Structure:  

  • Chief of State: President Evariste NDAYISHIMIYE (since 25 November 2005) 

  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Gervais NDIRAKOBUCA (since 7 September 2022) 

  • Assembly: bicameral Parliament (Parlement) with a 123-seat National Assembly (Assemblée Nationale) and a 39-seat Senate (Sénat) 

 

Electoral System:  

  • The President is directly elected by absolute majority vote in up to two rounds and may serve up to two terms of seven years. 

  • The Prime Minister is nominated by the President and confirmed by Parliament. 

  • In the National Assembly, 100 members are directly elected by proportional representation vote and an additional 23 members are appointed to achieve a gender quotas (at least 30% women) and ethnic quotas (3 Twa members and a 60:40 Hutu-Tutsi ratio). Members serve five-year terms, and there are no term limits. 

  • In the Senate, 36 members are indirectly elected by members of communal councils with each council electing two senators of different ethnic groups. An additional 3 Twa members are appointed. All 39 members serve five-year terms, and there are no term limits. 

 

In 2020, the CNDD-FDD won a majority with 86 seats, followed by the CNL (32 seats) and UPRONA (2 seats). Voter turnout was 86%.
