At Stake in this Election: 

  • All 51 seats of the Surinamese National Assembly 

  • Chief of State: President Chandrikapersad “Chan” SANTOKHI (since 16 July 2020) 

  • Head of Government: President Chandrikapersad “Chan” SANTOKHI (since 16 July 2020) 

  • Assembly: unicameral 51-seat National Assembly (Nationale Assemblée) 

  • The President and the Vice President are indirectly elected by the National Assembly to serve a 5-year term. There are no term limits.  

  • Members of the National Assembly are directly elected for a five-year term via a single, nationwide constituency via list proportional representation vote. 

The last National Assembly election was held on May 25, 2020. The Progressive Reform Party (Vooruitstrevende Hervormings Partij) won 20 seats, the National Democratic Party won 16, the General Liberation and Development Party won 8 seats, the National Party of Suriname won 3 seats, and Pertjajah Luhur won 2 seats. Voter turnout was 72%.  

In 2022, the Supreme Court ruled that the existing electoral system, comprised of outdated population-based electoral districts, was unconstitutional. The National Assembly passed legislation in 2023 that replaced the existing system with a single, nationwide constituency.
