General Information

At Stake in this Election: 

  • All 240 seats of the National Assembly of Bulgaria 

European Parliament elections, including contests for 17 Bulgarian seats, will occur concurrently.

  • Chief of State: President Rumen RADEV (since 22 January 2017) 

  • Head of Government: Caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar GLAVCHEV (since 9 April 2024) 

  • Assembly: unicameral National Assembly (Народно събрание / Narodno Sabranie) with 240 seats

  • The President is directly elected by absolute majority popular vote in up to two rounds. The president may serve up to two 5-year terms. 

  • The Prime Minister is elected by the National Assembly. 

  • Members of the National Assembly are directly elected by proportional representation vote in multi-seat constituencies. Parties and coalitions must earn at least 4% of the overall vote to receive a seat. Members serve 4-year terms.

In the 2023 snap election, six coalitions and parties won seats led by GERB-SDS with 64 seats. Voter turnout was 39.11%.

This will be Bulgaria’s sixth legislative election since 2021. President Radev dissolved the National Assembly in March of 2024 and called a snap election after the governing coalition fell apart.
