Government Structure:  

  • Chief of State: President Kais SAIED (since 23 October 2019) 

  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Kamel MADDOURI (since 7 August 2024) 

  • Assembly: bicameral Parliament with a 77-seat National Council of Regions and Districts (المجلس الوطني للجهات والأقاليم) and a 161-seat Assembly of the People’s Representatives (مجلس نواب الشعب) 

Electoral System:  

  • The President is directly elected by absolute majority vote in up to two rounds. The President may serve up to two 5-year terms. 

  • The Prime Minister is appointed by the President. 

  • All 77 members of the National Council of Regions and Districts are indirectly elected by and among municipal, regional, and district councils. All members serve 5-year terms. 

  • 161 members of the Assembly of People’s Representatives are directly elected by absolute majority vote in up to two rounds, including 10 members from the Tunisian diaspora. All members serve 5-year terms. 

Last Election: 

In the 2019 presidential election, Kais SAIED (independent candidate) won in the second round with 72% of the vote, defeating Nabil KAROUI (Au cœur de la Tunisie). Voter turnout in the second round was 54%.
