- Assembly: unicameral National Assembly (Al Jamiya Al Wataniya) which consists of 176 seats
- The President is directly elected by absolute majority popular vote in 2 rounds if needed. The President serves a 5-year term.
- The Prime Minister is appointed by the President.
- 88 members in the National Assembly are elected from one or two seat constituencies via two-round majority vote. The other members 88 are elected from a single, nationwide constituency directly elected by proportional representation vote. Among these 88 national seats, 20 seats are reserved for women, 11 for candidates between the ages of 25-35, and 4 are reserved for diaspora voters. All members serve 5-year terms.
The last presidential election was held in 2019. Mohamed Ould Ghazouani received 483,312 votes (52.01%), Biram Dah Abeid received 172,656 votes (18.58%), and Sidi Mohamed Ould Boubacar received 166,058 (17.87%). All other candidates received less than 10% of the vote. Voter turnout was 63%.
