Electoral System:  

  • The President is directly elected by absolute majority vote in up to two rounds. The President may serve up to two consecutive 5-year terms. 

  • The Prime Minister is appointed by the President and serves a 4-year term.  

  • All 81 members of the Senate are directly elected by absolute majority vote in up to two rounds. Members serve 6-year terms, and one-third of seats are up for election every 2 years. 

  • All 200 members of the Chamber of Deputies are directly elected by proportional representation vote, and lists must receive at least 5% of the vote to receive a seat. All members serve 4-year terms. 

Last Election: 

In the 2022 Senate election, the Civic Democratic Party won the largest share of seats (8), followed by three additional parties. Voter turnout was 42%.
