At Stake in this Election: 

  • All 17 seats of the House of Representatives of Antigua and Barbuda 

Government Structure:   

  • Chief of State: King Charles III (since 8 September 2022) 

  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Gaston BROWNE (since 13 June 2014) 

  • Assembly: Bicameral legislature consisting of a 17-seat House of Representatives and a 17-seat Senate 

Electoral System:  

  • The Chief of State is the monarch who then appoints the governor-general as vice-regal representative. 

  • The Prime Minister is generally the leader of the majority party after elections in the House of Representatives. 

  • The 17 members of the House of Representatives are elected in single-member constituencies by first-past-the-post voting. 16 of the seats were allocated for the island of Antigua and one for the island of Barbuda. They are elected to 5-year terms. 

  • The 17 members of the Senate are appointed by members of the government and the opposition party and approved by the governor-general.

  • In 2018, the Antigua and Barbuda Labor Party won 15 of the 17 seats. The two opposition parties (United Progressive Party and the Barbuda People’s Movement) each won one seat.
