General Information
The National Elections Authority in Egypt announced on 4 July 2020 that Senate elections will be held on 11-12 August 2020, with out-of-country voting taking place on 9-10 August. Run-off elections are to take place on September 8-9.
This is the first election for the upper house of the Egyptian Parliament since the previous upper house, the Shura Council, was abolished in the 2014 constitution. The new upper house, now known as the Senate, was re-established in the 2019 referendum and was slated to come into effect the next year. The Senate will have 300 members who will serve 5-year terms. One-third of the seats will be elected via a single member constituency system, another third will be elected through a closed party list system, and the last third will be directly appointed by the president, President Abdel Fattah AL-SISI.
