• Assembly: Cambodia has a bicameral Parliament consisting of the Senate with 61 seats and the National Assembly with 125 seats.

Description of electoral system:

• The King is hereditary.
• In the Senate, 57 members are elected by members of the National Assembly and local Commune councilors to serve 6-year terms, 2 members are elected by the National Assembly to serve 6-year terms and 2 members are appointed by the monarch to serve 6-year terms. In the National Assembly 125 members are elected by universal adult suffrage to serve 5-year terms.*

* A law passed in 2017 banned political parties from associating with anyone convicted of a criminal offense, which prevents former Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) leader SAM Rainsy from campaigning from abroad this election. Former CNRP leader KEM Sokha is currently in jail on several charges, including treason and defamation.
