  • The President is elected by the National Assembly to serve a 5-year term.
  • In the National Assembly 400 members are elected by popular vote. In the National Council of Provinces 90 members are elected .**

** The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) consists of nine provincial delegations nominated by the provincial legislatures, and a delegation from the South African Local Government Association (SALGA). Each of the provinces is allotted 10 seats in the NCOP.
