Description of electoral system:

  • The President is elected by absolute majority vote through a two-round system to serve a 5-year term.
  • Prime Minister is nominated by the President.
  • In the Senate (Sénat) 30 members are elected by absolute majority vote through a two-round system to serve 6-year terms*. In the Chamber of Deputies (Chambre des Députés) 99 members are elected by absolute majority vote in single-member constituencies to serve 4-year terms.**

* One-third of the Senate is elected every two years. There are 10 multi-member constituencies (each with three seats) corresponding to the country's departments.

** The electoral system is two-rounds.
