General Information

Egypt: President, 26 March 2018

At stake in this election:

  • The office of President of the Arab Republic of Egypt

Description of government structure:

  • Chief of State: President Abdel Fatah al-SISI
  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Sherif ISMAEL
  • Assembly: Egypt has a unicameral Parliament consisting of a House of Representatives (Maglis Al-Nowwab)

Description of electoral system:

  • The President is elected by absolute majority vote through a two-round system to serve a four-year term. However, as there are only two candidates running in the 2018 elections, a second round will not be needed.

Election Note:

  • There were originally other candidates in the race, but all the opposition but MOUSSA dropped out. MOUSSA's party, the Ghad Party, endorsed al-SISI and campaigned for him one week before MOUSSA joined the race. MOUSSA formed a campaign in support of al-SISI in 2017.

Candidates in this presidential race:

  • Abdel-Fattah al-SISI
    • Party: Independent
  • Moussa Moustafa MOUSSA
    • Party: Ghad Party

Last election:

  • Abdel Fatah al-SISI won the election with 96.9% of the vote; al-SISSI had left his military position to run for office after leading a coup against former president Mohamed MORSI.
  • The 2014 presidential election was the first since Mohamed MORSI was removed from office in July 2013. The election was held according to the then-new presidential election law issued by presidential decree on 8 March 2014. According to the constitution passed on 15 January 2014, procedures for parliamentary elections must begin by 18 July (6 months after the constitution was ratified). Although the original roadmap laid out by the military called for the parliamentary elections to be held first, the amended constitution allowed President MANSOUR to reverse the order and hold the presidential election first.
